As It Happened - Pakistan vs Australia, 3rd ODI at Abu Dhabi

The Man of the Match award goes to Glenn Maxwell while the Man of the Series award is given to Steven Smith. Pakistan managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, yet again one must add. They have lost this series 3-0, a clean sweep. Australia have been all over them like a rash except for this game. The Test series starts on October 22nd, at 1000 local time. It looked like Pakistan were on their way to yet another embarrassing collapse after Afridi gifted away his wicket. However, Ali used his cool head and took Pakistan closer along with Umar Amin. There was another twist as both of them fell. Tanvir got it even more closer and Pakistan needed just 2 off the final over. You know what happened after that. Australia's innings was guided by a laborous 77 by Steven Smith after Warner's half century and some tiny contributions by the lower order.

Heart-break for Pakistan as they were in touching and feeling distance of a consolation win but lost in the last over as Maxwell bowled a maiden, a double wicket maiden with Pakistan needing just 2 runs to win. Tanvir gave it away and Irfan had no clue to how to get the ball off the middle. Pakistan got off to another solid start but their openers, once again departed in quick succession. The innings was nurtured by Maqsood and Shafiq thereafter but they too lost their wickets when it mattered most.

OUT! Irfan gets a leading edge and holes out! Flighted on middle and off, a little quick too and Irfan looks to swing. This time he does get some bat on the ball but it's the part you don't want the ball to go off. The leading edge takes the ball up in the air and Faulkner takes a simple catch at cover. AUSTRALIA WIN BY 1 RUN!

And, they say T20 cricket is the only exciting piece of cricket left.

Smith's left leg goes in the refreshment box beyond the ropes, but is safe. He falls and tumbles over after that on the grass.

This should have been OUT BUT IT'S NOT OUT! There has been a comedy of errors here, in the end Babar is run out but there is no appeal at all! Length around off, dropped away to point. The batsmen get confused but decide to go for the single. The throw comes to Faulkner who tries to take the bails off on the first attempt but can't and then tries once more. They haven't gone up and Faulkner doesn't appeal. The umpires don't go upstairs and this was out, even on the second attempt.

The ball goes right over there and Smith pouches the smartest of catches one would see. Are Pakistan collapsing again? There is some issue over what the rule is about the fielder moving early. Well, the rule actually is that once the ball is delivered they can move, Smith was not wrong at all. One can say that Alam was stupid to play a risky shot this early in his innings.
