Shahid Afridi, recently named Pakistan's T20 captain, is among four top cricketers found most unfit by the Pakistan Cricket Board. According to reports, the 34-year-old all-rounder failed a fitness test conducted on 28 players contracted by the cricket Board. Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq, six years elder to Afridi, is among the fittest.
Umar Akmal, Abdur Rehman and Raza Hasan were also found to be unfit in a test conducted between September 6 and 8. During a national camp in Lahore in May-June, the National Cricket Academy handed out programmes to players to maintain their fitness.
The lack of fitness will result in loss of pay. Afridi, Akmal, Rehman and Hasan will lose 25 per cent each of their monthly fee for four months starting August. The players can get their fitness reviewed after four months.
On the flip side, players like Misbah who maintained their fitness will get bonuses. Shan Masood and Umar Amin will get a bonus of 17.5% every month for the four-month period, while Misbah, Ahmed Shehzad and Bilawal Bhatti will get 10%.
Two players, Wahab Riaz and Nasir Jamshed will have to undergo fitness test once they return from the Champions League Twenty20. The duo is playing for Lahore Lions, who qualified for the main draw of the CLT20.
