Former BCCI treasurer Ajay Shirke on Sunday came down hard on BCCI president N Srinivasan and the way the emergent Working Committee meeting was conducted. Shirke, who resigned as BCCI treasurer on Friday to pressure Mr Srinivasan to resign, has said that Sunday's decision at an emergency meeting of the BCCI's working committee in Chennai is "a step backwards." Shirke also added that he would not return to the BCCI fold. (N Srinivasan steps aside, Dalmiya to be interim president)
"Extremely sad, disappointed and concerned about the future of the BCCI but I do not wish to get into positions where my thoughts are marginalised." (An extraordinarily fair stand: Srinivasan to NDTV)
Punjab Cricket Association chief IS Bindra said most members of the Board wanted Mr Srinivasan to resign but, "Only I asked for his resignation, no one else had the guts." Mr. Shirke echoed his views adding that no one opposed Srinivasan at the meet.
"There were a few others too who were whispering and murmuring for Srinivasan to resign but IS Bindra was the only one to openly speak up for it. There was no significant opposition to Srinivasan in the meeting."
Mr. Srinivasan's mentor and former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya will serve as interim president. Sources said Mr Dalmiya's name for interim president was proposed by BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Anurag Thakur, both members of the working committee.
"Where ever presidential power is to be exercised, which is substantial in the BCCI constitution, Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya will take the matters to Srinivasan for a sign-off. That is the 'arrangement' that has been made. Srinivasan remains as the president. This arrangement that has been worked out is not in conformation with the BCCI constitution. Mr. Dalmiya will collate all the information of the working committee and then take it to him (Srinivasan)."
He then went on to add that in "his limited legal knowledge, that is something which does not fit within the BCCI constitution".
