NZ vs SA 2nd Test, Ball-by-ball commentary
We are back for New Zealand's reply. The players of South Africa are going through their fielding drills as the two umpires make their way out to the middle. Neil Brand with a pep talk in the Proteas huddle before they take their places on the field. It will be Devon Conway and Tom Latham to open the innings for New Zealand. Dane Paterson will start with the new ball for the visitors. Away we go...
... SECOND INNINGS ...
The bowling from the Kiwis was brilliant as they stuck to a perfect channel and bombarded back-to-back deliveries in the perfect areas. Rachin Ravindra was brilliant as he took 3 while William O'Rourke took four and the rest all chipped in with wickets as well. With the visitors scoring a mere 242 in their first innings the Kiwis would be once again aiming to bat long and inflict a massive lead on them.
The visitors were good with the bat but would be gutted on the way a few of their batters got out and threw up a good start that they got. After starting with 220 for 6 overnight the resistance of Shaun von Berg gave up early in the day as he succumbed to William O'Rourke and the tail then followed him in no time. Apart from Clyde Fortuin and Keegan Petersen everybody chipped in with a few but failed to capitalize on the starts they got. Ruan de Swardt was by far the best batter for the visitors as he implemented himself better than anybody else on the opponents and scored 64 runs.
We come to a close of the Proteas inning as they have been bundled out on 242 by the Kiwis.
OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! Two in two from the debutant, William O'Rourke to wrap up the innings. Dane Paterson goes for a big shot first up and perishes. William O'Rourke comes from over the wicket for the right-hander and bowls it on a good length, angling in, around middle and leg, Dane Paterson backs away a long way on the leg side and swings through the line. The ball comes on slower than he expected and he ends up slicing it high in the air off the bottom half of the bat. It goes up only as far as second slip as where Tom Latham settles under it and dives forward to take the catch safely. William O'Rourke finishes with 4 wickets and South Africa have been bowled out for 242 in their first innings.
Dane Paterson is the last man in.
OUT! CHOPPED ON! It's William O'Rourke again! End of Ruan de Swardt's long vigil. Steams in from around the wicket and hits the deck hard, on off, Ruan de Swardt hops back to defend it down onto the deck. The ball nips back in and catches the bottom part of the bat. It deflects onto his heels before trickling back onto the stumps to dislodge the bails. The debutant gets his third wicket and South Africa lose their ninth wicket with 242 runs on the board.
FOUR! Nicely done! Southee goes slightly fuller, at the stumps, Tshepo Moreki shows the full face of the bat and drives it through the vacant mid off region for a boundary to get off the mark.
Bangs it into the deck again, on off, Tshepo Moreki drops his gloves and sways away out of the line of the ball.
Serves it on a length, on off, Tshepo Moreki stays leg side of the ball and leaves it alone.
Southee goes short again, at the body of the batter, Tshepo Moreki goes for the pull again but the ball gets big on him and he fails to get the shot away.
Bowls it short and on off, Tshepo Moreki lifts his front leg to fetch the pull but gets an inside edge onto the pads.
At 128.3 clicks, on a good length, on off, Tshepo Moreki dabs it from the crease to backward point.
Keeps it full and straight, at the stumps, Ruan de Swardt gets right behind the line and knocks it back to the bowler.
Leg bye! On a back of a length, on middle and leg, Tshepo Moreki lifts his front leg and looks to help it away on the leg side. He misses and the ball comes off his thigh pad and it rolls to square leg for a leg bye.
Back of a length, outside off, Tshepo Moreki flirts with danger as he pokes at the delivery and gets beaten on the outside edge.
Edged and gone! Or is it? Not much excitement from New Zealand and Tim Southee decides against the review. And rightly so, it had come off the back pad. Angling into the right-hander, on a length, on off, Tshepo Moreki does not move his feet much and tries to block it with a straight bat. The ball holds its line to beat the bat and it comes off the back pad on its way to the keeper, Tom Blundell.
Goes wide of the crease and gets the ball to nip back in sharply off the deck, on a good length, on middle, Tshepo Moreki gets beaten all ends up and gets rapped high on the back leg.
Bowls it on a short of a length, on off, Ruan de Swardt gets on his toes and extends his arms to punch it through point. Will Young gives it a chase and slides to save a run for his side. Three runs taken.
