Aaron Redmond scored a half century and shared a 90-run stand with Jesse Ryder to lead New Zealand's fightback against Bangladesh on Monday, leaving the visitors needing another 172 runs to win the first Test with one day and 8 wickets left.

Chasing a target of 317, New Zealand was 145-2 by stumps on the fourth day after dismissing Bangladesh for 242 in its second innings.

Jamie How and Redmond shared a 55-run opening partnership before Abdur Razzak bowled How for 36.

Redmond and Jesse Ryder built a 90-run second-wicket partnership, which ended when Ryder was run out on 38.

Redmond, whose first Test 50 came from 135 balls and included seven boundaries, finished the day on 62 not out and captain Daniel Vettori was yet to score.

Resuming on an overnight total of 184-8, Bangladesh tailenders Mashrafee bin Murtaza and Razzak ended their 40-run, ninth wicket partnership when Ross Taylor took a catch at slip off Iain O'Brien to remove Razzak for 18. The tailenders added 58 runs Monday in the last 23 overs.

Murtaza and Shahadat Hossain shared 22 before Brendon McCullum stumped Murtaza off Redmond. Murtaza's 44 came off 87 balls with seven boundaries.

Vettori got four wickets for 74 runs, Jeetan Patel and O'Brien took two apiece, while Kyle Mills and Aaron Redmond had one each.

Hasan's 7-36 haul helped dismiss New Zealand in its first innings for 171 in reply to Bangladesh's 245. It was the best bowling figures for Bangladesh in a Test innings, overhauling Enamul Haque's 7-95 against Zimbabwe in 2005 at Chittagong.

Bangladesh has never won a Test against New Zealand, losing five of their six previous matches by an innings. New Zealand won the preceding limited-overs series 2-1.
