N. Srinivasan has apologised to the Supreme Court on Friday for attending a Board of Control for Cricket in India working committee meeting in spite of a court order asking him to stay away from Board affairs till his "conflict of interest" charges were cleared. Kapil Sibal, Srinivasan's lawyer, also told the Supreme Court bench that the ICC chairman will not participate in the BCCI AGM on March 2. It effectively means Srinivasan will not be able to contest the BCCI elections. He was seeking a second term as Board president. (Complete IPL saga)
However, Srinivasan can participate as a general member and will be eligible to cast his vote in case of elections during AGM. He is the president of Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, a position he has used to chair BCCI meetings in recent times. (Also read: Supreme Court's Top 10 observations in the IPL spot-fixing case)
After Friday's court proceedings, Srinivasan's innings as BCCI boss -- he was in exile during the period the 2013 IPL corruption case was being probed by a court-appointed panel -- officially comes to an end. On January 22, the Supreme Court had technically knocked him out by saying Srinivasan had conflict of interest in Indian cricket because he also owned an IPL team (Chennai Super Kings) and had commercial dealings. It is still not clear whether Srinivasan will continue to run the BCCI by proxy by having one of his die-hard supporters become the new president. Reports suggest that Srinivasan is backing current secretary Sanjay Patel to take over as president.
Names of former president Jagmohan Dalmiya and BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla are also doing the rounds. Former BCCI boss and Mumbai cricket chief Sharad Pawar is likely to oppose the Srinivasan camp. It is East Zone's turn to nominate a presidential candidate.
With just two days left to align their respective camps -- 31 votes will be up for grabs -- BCCI will see some hectic politicking as Team India get ready to play World Cup minnows UAE in Perth on Saturday.
