India vs South Africa Highlights, 1st Test Day 1: Jasprit Bumrah was the star of the show as India dominated South Africa on Day 1 of the first Test in Kolkata. After opting to bat, Temba Bavuma-led South Africa were bowled out for just 159 by Shubman Gill's India. The tormentor-in-chief was pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who picked up a five-wicket haul and displayed exactly why he's the No. 1 bowler in the world. India finished on 37/1 in 20 overs at Stumps, trailing South Africa by 122 runs. India lost the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal, but KL Rahul and Washington Sundar saw out the day for the hosts. (SCORECARD)

India vs South Africa LIVE: Thank you!

That's a wrap for our live coverage of Day 1 of the first Test between India and South Africa. India have delighted a packed-out Eden Gardens crowd on the opening day, but don't count out reigning WTC winners South Africa just yet.

Do join us on NDTV Sports for Day 2. Until then, why not check out our coverage of India A's Asia Cup Rising Stars match? (IND vs UAE, Asia Cup Rising Stars 2025 - LIVE)

India vs South Africa LIVE: Day 1 belongs to India

Apart from the first 10 overs of the day, India can say that they've been the better side throughout. South Africa came out all guns blazing, as Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton smashed 57 runs in the first 10. But then Bumrah dismissed both in consecutive overs. South Africa ultimately were bowled out for only 159, with Bumrah stealing the headlines with a fifer.

With the bat, yes, India lost the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal. But KL Rahul and Washington Sundar's patience have seen them through in the final hours. 9 wickets still left, they'll start in the driving seat tomorrow.

India vs South Africa LIVE: Stumps!

Stumps on Day 1! A total of 75 overs possible on the first day. India end Day 1 on 37/1 after 20 overs, trundling along at a run-rate of 1.85. Just 196 runs scored in the entire day. Still, India will be much the happier side, given their exceptional bowling performance earlier today.

IND 37/1 (20) - Stumps

IND vs SA 1st Test Live Score: FOUR!

The shackles are broken! First runs after 27 balls, and it's a wonderful back foot slam from KL Rahul. The opener finally moves into double digits. Dive from the fielder in the circle, but the ball races away past him for 4. Huge roar from the Eden crowd.

IND 36/1 (18)

IND vs SA 1st Test Live Score: Three maidens in a row

KL Rahul and Washington Sundar are blocking and ducking everything at the moment. Three consecutive maidens. Meanwhile, the umpires are having a chat over the light at the venue. It gets dark quite fast in the winter in Kolkata.

IND 32/1 (17)

IND vs SA 1st Test Live Score: Things moving slowly

Neither KL Rahul nor Washington Sundar playing any extravagant strokes at the minute. With less than an hour's play likely left, both players seem keen to keep their wickets intact till Stumps. Just 4 runs in the last 4 overs.

IND 32/1 (14)

IND 28/1 (10)

IND vs SA 1st Test Live Score: FOUR!

Lovely shot! Classic KL Rahul! Hint of width offered by Mulder, Rahul gets on top off the ball and gracefully punches it through the covers. First boundary of the innings for Rahul, it comes on his 26th delivery.

"Picture perfect," says Sunil Gavaskar.

IND 28/1 (9.3)

IND vs SA 1st Test Live Score: Washington Sundar in at No. 3

Is this the start of a new era? Washington Sundar has displayed his batting talent already in whites, but the No. 3 role comes with added responsibility. His impeccable all-round ability has made him a fixture in the playing XI in Test cricket, but now he is in at the position that Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara once made their own for a decade each. Huge shoes to fill.

IND vs SA 1st Test Live Score: FOUR! OUT!

GONE! Yashasvi Jaiswal departs! Right after slamming a boundary, Jaiswal ends up dragging one onto his stumps. Marco Jansen delivers the first wicket for South Africa. Jaiswal looks gutted with himself.

And now, the questions have been answered! Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir have chosen Washington Sundar for the No. 3 spot!

IND 18/1 (7)

India vs South Africa LIVE: Jaiswal getting into his groove

Two boundaries for Yashasvi Jaiswal in quick succession! The left-hander slams boundaries in consecutive overs, once against Jansena and then against Mulder. Jaiswal also taking a fair bit of time to settle in, something he has incorporated into his game recently, before eventually accelerating.

IND 13/0 (6)

India vs South Africa LIVE: Two big appeals!

Two big appeals from South Africa, with Yashasvi Jaiswal the man in question both times. Wiaan Mulder first traps Jaiswal on the pads, and it's followed by a big appeal, but the umpire says no. A couple of deliveries later, Kyle Verreyne appeals strongly for caught behind, as a ball goes down the legside. Replays show it hit Jaiswal's thigh-pad.

IND 2/0 (2)

India vs South Africa LIVE: India innings begins!

We are underway again! Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul opening for India. We still have nearly a couple of hours to go. Marco Jansen opening the bowling for South Africa. Remember, no Kagiso Rabada for the visitors, as he's out with a rib injury!

IND 0/0 (0.1)

India vs South Africa LIVE: Huge feat for Bumrah

For the first time since 2008, a fast bowler has taken 5 wickets on the opening day of a red-ball Test held in India. On that occasion, it was Dale Steyn. The last instance overall was Ishant Sharma, who scalped 5 at Eden Gardens in the pink-ball Test in 2019.

India vs South Africa, 1st Test LIVE: Bumrah Completes 5-For, SA All-Out For 159

There's no stopping this man! Jasprit Bumrah strikes once again in the final session to complete his 5-wicket haul. The figures of 5/27 speak exactly what the marquee pacer was able to do on Eden Gardens today. It's time for the Indian batters to prove their worth now!

SA 159 all out (55)

India vs South Africa LIVE: Bumrah Bags His 4th Wicket

Boundary and then a Wicket! An unexpected boundary for Simon Harper! The ball hit the toe of his bat as he tried to leave a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah and races towards the third man boundary. Bumrah then bounces back and clean bowls the Proteas batter on the next delivery.

SA 154/8 (53)

India vs South Africa, 1st Test LIVE: Final Session Begins

The players have returned after the tea break, and it's time for the final session to begin. India only need two more wickets to bowl out the South African team. It's Bumrah who will bowl the first over of the post-Tea session.

India vs South Africa LIVE: SA 154/8 at Tea

Tea on Day 1. 25 overs but just 52 runs in the second session. Kuldeep and Bumrah picked up a wicket each at the start of the session, and then Siraj and Axar also entered the wickets' column. South Africa are staring at an under-200 total.

50 overs done on Day 1. Just 17 runs in the last 10 overs for the Proteas, with Tristan Stubbs opting for caution over aggression. Two wickets were lost in this period, both in the same over, as Siraj dismissed Verreyne and Jansen.

SA 153/7 (50)

India vs South Africa LIVE: 150 up for SA

150 up for South Africa in the 48th over. Ravindra Jadeja completes his 8th over, he's bowled a miserly spell at an economy of just 1.63 so far. Tristan Stubbs is the most recognized batter left, but he is going at a strike rate of 26. Stubbs perhaps realizes that he can ill-afford to squander his wicket at this stage.

SA 151/7 (48)

India vs South Africa LIVE: BOWLED! Beauty!

MAGNIFICENT! What a ball from Mohammed Siraj! This one is an absolute gem from the pacer. Marco Jansen has no answer whatsoever, as the ball swings back in and knocks over his stumps. He departs for a duck. South Africa are 7 down!

SA 147/7 (45)

India vs South Africa 1st Test LIVE: OUT! Siraj strikes!

Mohammed Siraj has come back with a much more disciplined spell this time around. After conceding 25 runs in his first 3 overs, Siraj has conceded only 18 in his next 6. Yes, the situation has helped him, but nevertheless, he's bounced back well. He'd be desperate for a wicket now.

SA 144/5 (43)

Oh dear! Two chances go begging in consecutive deliveries. Kuldeep creates an opportunity, Kyle Verreyne ends up edging it, but a hint of confusion between wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill at first slip sees the ball run away between the two fielders for 4! Neither went for the catch.

The very next ball, Dhruv Jurel puts down a catch at forward short-leg! Tough chance, but could've been taken.

SA 125/5 (34)

India vs South Africa LIVE: Big appeal turned down!

What a yorker from Bumrah! Kyle Verreyne did not see that coming, first ball! Hint of reverse swing, a toe-crushing yorker from Bumrah traps Verreyne on the pads. Huge appeal, but the umpire says no. Verreyne survives!

India vs South Africa LIVE: Washington Sundar at No. 3?

While we won't have to worry about India's batting for now, it will be interesting to see who bats at No. 3. Washington Sundar has been listed at that position in the visuals, and that would be a really bold call by the management. Perhaps Jurel? Maybe even Axar?

India vs South Africa LIVE: Players are out!

Here come the players! Time for the national anthems. We are just about 5 minutes away from the start of action at the Eden Gardens. South Africa to bat first, while India will pin their early hopes on Bumrah and Siraj!

India vs South Africa LIVE: India Playing XI

India vs South Africa LIVE: Big star dropped by India!

Three all-rounders in the Indian team, no Sai Sudharsan! Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel ALL feature! Tough luck for Sai Sudharsan, who had slammed a half-century in his previous Test.

Big decision coming up for India at No. 3!

India vs South Africa LIVE: SA win toss, opt to bat!

India vs South Africa LIVE: High-quality pace batteries

While spinners will play a big factor, don't look past the serious quality in the pace attack of both sides. India boast the No. 1-ranked Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah, alongside Mohammed Siraj. On the other hand, South Africa could come in with the superb Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder!

India vs South Africa LIVE: Less than 10 minutes to toss!

India vs South Africa LIVE: Axar Patel or Kuldeep Yadav?

Ahead of the first Test, India's big selection dilemma lies in the choice of the third spinner. Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar are almost guaranteed to feature, given their batting ability and recent good form. However, despite Kuldeep Yadav's excellent display against West Indies, Axar Patel could be selected due to his ability with the bat.

Axar's case has been made stronger by the fact that all-rounder Nitish Reddy is no longer in line for selection for this match. A big choice ahead for captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

India vs South Africa LIVE: South Africa's big win in Pakistan

WTC winners South Africa got off to a tricky start in the new 2025-27 cycle, losing their first Test against Pakistan in Pakistan. However, despite missing several key players, South Africa roared back in the second Test to clinch a 1-1 series draw.

The performance of spinners Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer and Senuran Muthusamy in Pakistan should give the Proteas a lot of confidence ahead of their India challenge.

India vs South Africa LIVE: 30 minutes to toss

We are just around half an hour away from toss time at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The last time India played here was almost 6 years ago, in the first pink-ball Test to be held in India. Different conditions, different timings now. Against the WTC winners no less.

India vs South Africa, 1st Test LIVE: Shubman Gill On Cusp Of History

India captain Shubman Gill has the opportunity to break the record for the most centuries by an Indian Test captain in a calendar year. He currently has five this year, a feat that places him alongside Virat Kohli, who achieved the same mark twice (in 2017 and 2018). No Indian captain has ever scored six centuries in a single calendar year.

India vs South Africa, 1st Test LIVE: Practice Done, Now Time For Action

The members of the Indian team really put in a shift to preapre themselves for the a tough battle against the World Test Championship winners. Will India be able to assert their home dominance against the Proteas?

India vs South Africa, 1st Test LIVE: Eden Gardens Pitch Report

There are few venues in India that provide assistance to pacers on the opening day of a Test, let alone across multiple days. Eden Gardens, however, is one ground where seamers can exploit lateral movement and bounce for at least the first couple of days. Spinners are expected to come into play only from the third day onward. As a result, the opening Test is likely to stretch into a four or five-day contest, particularly with two top sides going head-to-head.

India vs South Africa, 1st Test LIVE: South Africa's Likely Playing XI

Three spinners and two quicks or the exact opposite, what combination will South Africa step into the Eden Gardens with?

South Africa's Likely Playing XI: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Tony de Zorzi, Temba Bavuma (c), Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne, Senuran Muthusamy, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada

India vs South Africa, 1st Test LIVE: India's Likely Playing XI

Though both Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel are expected to feature in India's XI, it would be interesting to see which one among them gets to take the wicket-keeper's spot. Jurel is a better keeper, and there's no denying that. But, Pant is India's No. 1 choice behind the stumps overall.

India's Likely Playing XI: KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah

India vs South Africa, 1st Test LIVE: Will Kuldeep Yadav Be Selected?

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Day 1 of the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. With the pacers expected to dominate proceedings over the first couple of days, India face a big decision regarding the selection of their spinners. Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja are all competing for three spin-bowling spots in the team.

The omission of Nitish Kumar Reddy leaves India one all-rounder short for this Test. Could that mean Kuldeep finds himself on the bench once again?
