India opener Rohit Sharma was in his elements as he brought up his 14th ODI century against Australia in the fifth and final ODI played at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur. Rohit got to his century in style by hitting Nathan Coulter-Nile for a six over mid-wicket and took only 94 balls to reach the landmark. Out of the 14 centuries that Rohit has scored, 6 of them have come against Australia. The young Indian opener went after the Australian bowling after a cautious start, having got off the mark on the 15th ball of the innings. The vice-captain of the Indian side also brought up his 6000 runs in ODI cricket on his way to scoring a ton.
Earlier, Rohit became the fastest player to reach 2000 ODI runs at home, going past former India captain Sourav Ganguly and current India skipper Virat Kohli. While Ganguly took 45 innings to score those runs, Kohli took 46 innings to achieve the same feat. Going past both of them, Rohit just took 42 innings to achieve the milestone. The 30-year-old also went past former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum to hit the most number of sixes against Australia in ODIs in the last ODI. The Mumbai Indians skipper became the first batsman in the ODI history to hit 50 sixes against Australia.
After restricting Australia to a score of 242 for 9, both the Indian openers had put together a century-run stand, before Ajinkya Rahane departed for 61. Adam Zampa, at last, got the better off Rohit but not before the Mumbai batsman had already done the damage. Rohit (125 off 109) departed with the score on 223 for 2 with India needing only 20 runs to regain the No 1 ODI rankings by winning the series 4-1.
