Wellington:
Hadlee confirmed Sunday he will act as an executive consultant to the American Premier League, a six-team Twenty20 competition, likely to be staged for the first time in New York in October.
The league, which Hadlee said he has agreed to join until 2011, lacks official status with the International Cricket Council.
The ICC has encouraged players and officials not to join the league, which will be played along the lines of the Indian Premier League and aims to sign some of the world's top players.
Hadlee refused to comment Sunday on the league's status but Vaughan regretted his involvement.
"It's regrettable he's aligned with an unsanctioned and unofficial circuit. It's certainly not preferable but he's got his life to lead," Vaughan said.
Hadlee, 57, played 86 tests and 115 one-day internationals for New Zealand and is regarded as the country's greatest player. He was later a New Zealand cricket selector.
