Gambhir will come in place of injured Shikhar Dhawan
Gautam Gambhir will take fresh guard at Indore’s Holkar Stadium on Saturday as he makes a return to Test cricket after a gap of two years. Sunil Gavaskar feels the Delhi left-hander deserves to get another crack at the longest format of the game.
Gambhir was recalled to the Test squad after Lokesh Rahul was ruled out after injuring himself in the first Test against New Zealand in Kanpur. Gambhir, to be 35 on October 14, was expected to play the Kolkata Test but Shikhar Dhawan was drafted in to open with Murali Vijay.
Dhawan's finger injury in the second Test at the Eden Gardens opened the doors for Gambhir, who last played a Test match in August 2014 at The Oval.
"Gambhir is a specialist opener and deserves to get another chance to play Tests. He has worked hard for it and even went to Justin Langer in Australia to improve his batting," Gavaskar told NDTV in an exclusive interview on Friday.
Gambhir was in good touch during the recent Duleep Trophy. He scored 356 runs in five innings and scored four fifties for champions India Blue.
"He (Gautam Gambhir) is our third opener and his place in the team for the third Test is a natural progression," said skipper Virat Kohli in his pre-match chat with reporters in Indore on Friday.
Gavaskar says the wicket in Indore will favour the batsmen. That will be music for Gautam Gambhir's ears.
