England fast bowler Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the rest of the Ashes and the following One-Day Internationals against Australia with injury.

England fast bowler Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the rest of the Ashes and the following One-Day Internationals against Australia with injury, team officials said on Tuesday.

A bitterly disappointed Broad, 24, tore abdominal stomach muscles on Monday's fourth day and did not take any further part in the second Adelaide Test.

A team spokesman said Broad would return home shortly to begin rehabilitation and recovery ahead of England's World Cup campaign in South Asia in February.

"Playing for England in an Ashes series in Australia has been something I've dreamed of for a long time, so to have that cut short by injury is devastating," Broad said.

"So far the series has been everything I had anticipated and knowing I'll play no further part is quite hard to take.

"Given the way we had started the series I was looking forward to playing a leading role in England retaining the Ashes but that's not to be.

"Injuries happen and there's nothing I can do about it other than make sure I get stuck into rehabilitation and come back stronger in time for the World Cup next year."

England team doctor Nick Peirce said in a statement: "Stuart has a torn abdominal muscle and as such will take no further part in the current Ashes tour of Australia.

"Given the nature of the injury, Stuart has been ruled out of the forthcoming ODI series (in January) against Australia as well.

"Stuart will return to England shortly to commence a rehabilitation programme and we expect him to make a full recovery in time for the World Cup next year."

Skipper Andrew Strauss said after England's crushing innings victory over Australia that the team was similarly disappointed.

"He's distraught and I think we're all distraught that he's going to be leaving us because he's a big part of our side, not just on the field but off the field too," Strauss said.

"He's been one of the mainstays of our bowling attack for a while and he's got all the ingredients to bowl well in Australia."

Strauss said that Chris Tremlett, Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad would get their chance to replace Broad in the next tour match, against Victoria starting in Melbourne on Friday.

"We'll see which one is looking the most potent and the most suited for Perth, which is going to be important as well," he said, referring to the third Test, which starts on December 16.
