Dubai:

England successfully chased down Pakistan's modest total of 129-8 to win their first of two Twenty20s by seven wickets at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday.

England was in some trouble at 18-3 but Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan came together for the highest England fourth-wicket partnership in a Twenty20 _ 112 runs off 86 balls _ allowing Paul Collingwood's men to reach 130-3 with nine balls to spare.

Morgan was unbeaten on 67 off 51 balls, while Pietersen contributed a run-a-ball 43 not out.

"Hats off to KP and Morgan," Collingwood said. "We had a bit of a blip at the start but the guys kept their cool to pull it off for us."

After dismissing Joe Denly (1), bowling fellow opener Jonathan Trott (4) and running out Collingwood (0), Morgan and Pietersen batted with an efficient mix of aggression and quick singles. Morgan, who reached his 50 in 43 balls, slammed Umar Gul for two fours and a six off the first three balls in the 19th over to wrap up the game in style.

Earlier, Pakistan extended its poor run with the bat.

A reckless display by the batsmen squandered the winning toss by stand-in captain Shoaib Malik, who was leading in place of Shahid Afridi. Afridi was serving a two-match ban for ball tampering and will be available for Saturday's game.

Pakistan wickets fell at regular intervals, starting with opener Imran Nazir who pulled a Stuart Broad delivery to Denly at midwicket, to start the slide.

Malik played a steady hand in the middle overs but he too got out to a tame shot in the 15th over to derail any hopes of recovery.

Graeme Swann was the pick of England's bowlers, taking 2-18.

"We were at least 20 to 25 runs short, but I thought the England bowlers made good use of the conditions," Malik said. "The wicket was a lot slower than our expectation. We thought there will be some bounce in it. Our bowlers started well, but Morgan and KP batted superbly."
