Former India captain Mohd Azharuddin's son Mohd Ayazuddin, who was grievously injured in a road accident here, continues to remain "very critical".
Dr Hari Prasad, CEO, Apollo Hospital said a nephrectomy (removal of kidney) procedure was performed on Tuesday. Ayazuddin's neurological condition, the doctor said, is still a matter of concern. Doctors fear that there may be significant brain dysfunction due to anoxia during the period in which the patient was in a collapsed stage after the accident.
Ayazuddin, 19, met with an accident on Sunday morning when the 1600 cc Suzuki sports bike he was driving skidded on the outskirts of the city.
Ayazuddin has serious injuries in the head, chest and abdomen. His cousin Ajmal-ur-Rahman (16), who was riding pillion, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Apollo hospital.
Azharuddin, who flew in here from London, is at the hospital with his family members.
Ayazuddin is the younger son of Azharuddin and also plays local league cricket. He is the son of Nourin, Azharuddin's first wife. They are divorced. Azharuddin's second wife is former actor Sangeeta Bijlani. Azharuddin and Nourin's older son Asaduddin also plays local league cricket.
A medical bulletin issued in the evening by Apollo Hospital said that Ayazuddin was still unconscious and his neurological status was a cause of grave concern.
He is being continuously monitored by a multi-specialty team.
"He had continuous bleeding from the injury to the left kidney and left nephrectomy was performed this morning," it said.
His vital parameters are being maintained with supports and he continues to be on ventilator. "His status remains to be critical," the bulletin added.
