Virat Kohli has undoubtedly been the batsman of 2016. The only one who can possibly match up to him currently is South African AB de Villiers.
The India Test skipper has had an unbelievable 2016. After being named the player of the tournament in the World Twenty20 where he scored 273 runs at an average of 136.5, the 27-year-old followed it up with 973 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Without Kohli, the Royal Challengers Bangalore wouldn't have even managed to reach the IPL knockouts, let alone finishing runners-up.
Despite all this success, there was something else remaining for him which he achieved on Friday in North Sound, Antigua.
Kohli, who is now seen as the natural successor to Sachin Tendulkar, added another feather to his cap by scoring his maiden Test double century.
It was his 12th century in Tests and his gestures and comments after the day clearly indicated that he desperately wanted this, that he had longed for it.
"Yes, it is a very good feeling. I made my debut here and it wasn't a memorable series for me. Coming back here and getting a double hundred gives me a lot of satisfaction purely because of the fact that I have missed a couple of big scores in the past," said Kohli, who had averaged just over 15 in the 2011 trip to the Caribbean.
Kohli's previous tour of the West Indies, in his own words - not a memorable one and surely his 283-ball knock, which included 24 boundaries, would have helped him heal the scars of the past.
Under challenging conditions and on a sluggish wicket, he put India in a position of command where the visiting team can clearly dictate terms in the next four days.
His aggressive innings was also the first double century by an Indian skipper overseas.
His genius does not stop at that either. It was his idea to promote Ravichandran Ashwin up which clearly bore fruit.
The bowling all-rounder scored his third Test century on Friday and thanked Kohli and India head coach Anil Kumble for promoting him up the batting order.
Kohli's idea to experiment not just with his batting but also with his captaincy proved to be a masterstroke.
The top-order batsman has played some top knocks this year, like his innings against Australia in the World Twenty20 where he almost single-handedly took India into the semi-finals, this double ton also ranks right up there.
