Joe Root and Kevin Pietersen struck fifties as England neared a position of safety after Day 3 of the fifth and final Ashes Test against Australia at The Oval on Friday. Here are the statistical highlights from the day's play.

# Root, for the first time, has managed 300 runs in a Test series - 328 at an average of 41.00 in nine innings, including a century and a fifty.

# Root's 68 is his third fifty in Tests - his second highest score vs Australia, next only to the 180 at Lord's last month.

# Root and Cook were involved in a stand of 68 - the first fifty-plus partnership for the first wicket for England in the present series. The previous highest was 47 between the same pair at Manchester.

# Root and Trott were associated in a partnership of 50.  For the first time in the present series, the top two wickets for England have produced fifty-plus stands.

# Trott and Pietersen have shared a stand of 58 for the third wicket.  For the first time in the Ashes 2013, the top three wickets have recorded fifty-plus partnerships.

# Ian Bell (755), Michael Clarke (718) and Trott (715) are the top run-getters in Tests this year.

# Bell has managed 529 runs at an average of 75.57 in nine innings, including three hundreds and two fifties - his career-best performance in terms of run-aggregate in a Test series.  His previous best was 504 (ave.84.00) in four Tests vs India in 2011, including two hundreds.

# Ryan Harris has captured 21 wickets at an average of 20.08 in four Tests - his best performance in a Test series.

# Despite posting three fifties in the present series, Alastair Cook's average of 27.00 (243 in nine innings) is his worst in a Test series as captain.

# Kevin Pietersen (50) has registered his tenth fifty vs Australia - his 32nd in Tests.

# Pietersen enjoys an excellent record at The Oval, aggregating 835 in eight Tests at an average of 59.64, including four hundreds and two fifties.
