Madrid, Spain:
Marion Bartoli won her first match at the Sony Ericsson Championships Friday when Jelena Jankovic retired due to a virus while trailing 6-1, 1-0.
The 10th-ranked Bartoli, who became the first player in the tournament's 35-year history to lose 6-0, 6-0 on Thursday, broke serve four times in a match that meant nothing with the semifinalists decided.
"I have a virus and I've been sick for a couple of days," said Jankovic, who finished 0-3 in her first appearance at the round-robin event.
"I have trouble breathing and I'm suffering on the court and I can't play my game," he said.
Later Friday, Number 3 Ana Ivanovic meets Number 6 Maria Sharapova with the loser playing defending champion Justin Henin in Saturday's semifinals.
The winner will take on Number 7 Anna Chakvetadze.
Also, Number 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova plays Daniela Hantuchova.
After replacing the injured Serena Williams in the tournament, Bartoli lost 6-0, 6-0 to Henin on Thursday.
"It's really a strange week for me," Bartoli said. "Yesterday, I lost really badly and my wish for today was to play much better and have fun because it's the last match of the season, but I feel bad for Jelena."
Williams took home US$43,333 (euro29,547) because she completed one of three group matches before being replaced. Bartoli was left with US$86,667 (euro59,091) for finishing third in the group.
