World number four Maria Sharapova will spearhead the Russian squad in this year's Fed Cup opening round match with Spain, due to be played here on February 4-5, the country's tennis federation revealed on Wednesday.
Sharapova, who will face Czech Petra Kvitova in the Australian Open semi-finals, is a three-time Grand Slam winner (Wimbledon 2005, US Open 2006 and Australian Open 2008).
The 24-year-old was a member of Russia's Fed Cup-winning team in 2008.
Svetlana Kuznetsova, who has won three Fed Cups as well as US Open and French Open titles and is currently ranked 19th in the world, was also included in the squad.
The line-up is completed by world number 31 Nadia Petrova and world number 51 Ekaterina Makarova, who replaces replaced Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova after she was ruled out with a shoulder injury.
Russia lead Spain 5-1 in head-to-head meetings in the Fed Cup.
