Charleston:

Serena Williams overcame a slow start to stay perfect this season, moving to 20-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jelena Dokic at the Family Circle Cup on Friday night. After Williams had little trouble breaking Dokic's serve to begin the quarterfinal match, Dokic broke right back -- and sent a very loud wake-up call to Williams on the chilly evening. "It was a classic case of underestimating your opponent," Williams said. "Then I knew I was going to have a tough match and I would have to battle." And that's usually not a good thing for the player on the other side of the net. Dokic held serve only once more in the opening set. Williams needed only 19 more minutes to close out the match. Williams showed her power and finesse throughout the match -- often at the same time. She cracked a serve at 110 mph, then lunged for a soft drop shot winner that landed only a few feet past the net. In other quarterfinals, Lindsay Davenport defeated Vera Zvonareva 7-6 (3), 6-3, Justine Henin-Hardenne eliminated 2000 champion Mary Pierce 6-2, 6-3, and 17-year-old Ashley Harkleroad defeated Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 6-1. Williams takes on Davenport in Saturday's semifinals. "She's obviously been playing, I think, probably the best tennis maybe ever in women's tennis, and has been so dominant," said Davenport, playing her first clay-court tournament since the 2000 French Open. Williams beat Davenport in straight sets in the US Open semis last September, the last time the two met. "We always have very good matches, so we'll have to see," Williams said. While Williams continued winning, she also kept giving. Right after her match, she donated a $5,000 scholarship to College of Charleston track athlete Chakosha Lance. It's a fund Williams began last year at her first Family Circle Cup. (AP)
