Madrid:
America's Andy Roddick wasted a match point in the second set before going on to lose 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3) to Ivo Karlovic of Croatia in the second round of the Madrid Masters on Wednesday. The second-seeded American, who had received a bye in the first round in the Spanish capital, had beaten Karlovic on two occasions previously this year. But he found the opposition a good deal tougher on Wednesday. Roddick took the first set comfortably enough - by six games to three. The second was closer though, going to a tie-break. Roddick had match point at 6-5 in the second-set tiebreaker, but he netted a return and Karlovic won it 9-7 on his second set point when Roddick's return fell wide. Both players had their chances to break in the deciding set, but they moved on to another tiebreaker where Karlovic grabbed a 3-1 lead and didn't look back. Karlovic's first win over Roddick earned him a third round tie against 14th seed Dominik Hrbaty. In a late second round match that finished well after midnight, the 13th seed Tommy Robredo overcame fellow Spaniard Carlos Moya 6-4 3-6 6-1. Robredo will face another Spanish player - the top-seeded Rafael Nadal - in the third round. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
