Rome:

Top-seeded Andy Roddick continued his strong clay-court form today, improving to a 24-4 record with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Greg Rusedski at the Italian Open. Sixth-seeded Andre Agassi, winner of the Rome title in 2002, beat Italian wild card Alessio Di Mauro 7-5, 6-2 in the first round. Meanwhile, 2002 French Open champion Albert Costa of Spain beat countryman Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-4. After claiming the US Men's Clay Court title in Houston just over a week ago, Roddick took control with a break to go up 5-4 in the first set, forcing Rusedski to stretch for a volley that ended up in the net. Roddick then won the next five games and closed out the match when his British opponent returned a serve long. The 44th-ranked Rusedski, a serve-and-volley specialist, extended his slow start to the season. He has not made it to the third round of any tournament, including the Australian Open, where Roddick beat him in the second round. The third-ranked Roddick took over the top seeding for this French Open tune-up after Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt withdrew. (AP)
