Mumbai:
"I felt a little flat out there," Hewitt said. "He played some great tennis and some average tennis at times. He just went for broke on the bigger points."
The former top-ranked Australian, who won two matches on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals, withdrew from his Davis Cup reverse singles match last weekend because of a viral infection.
Hewitt squandered a 4-1 lead after dropping the first set. Schuettler was delighted with the win.
"I don't remember when was the last time I made the semifinal of an ATP event. It was a few years ago, I guess," Schuettler said.
Schuettler will face Olivier Rochus in the semifinals. The eighth-seeded Belgian advanced when Nicolas Kiefer of Germany retired while trailing 4-1 in the first set.
Top-seeded Richard Gasquet and Fabrice Santoro also reached the semifinals.
Gasquet, a Wimbledon semifinalist this year, beat Stefan Koubek of Austria 6-2, 6-4, and Santoro defeated Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-3, 6-4.
