Brussels:
Former tennis World Number one Kim Clijsters has announced her retirement from the game.
The popular 23-year-old right-hander won the US Open in 2005 and was a Wimbledon semi-finalist in both 2003 and 2006.
The announcement doesn't come as much of a surprise, considering that Clijsters had announced that this would be her last year of competitive tennis.
Clijsters' personal website said the Flemish-speaking Belgian had decided to put an end to her career. Clijsters says she is retiring in order to start a family.
Clijsters had earlier said in an interview with Sportweekend, that she had been offered the directorship of the Gaz de France Stars tournament in Hasselt after her retirement.
