India's tennis trauma: paging King Solomon

Chennai:

The Vice President of the All India Tennis Association, Karti P. Chidambaram, in an exclusive interview to NDTV has expressed hope that the tennis saga will end soon and Leander Paes will play in the Olympics.

"Even King Solomon could not have come up with a perfect solution." That's how Karti P.Chidambaram, Vice President of the All India Tennis Association responded to a pointed poser from NDTV. That is in fact on every tennis fan's mind: Why are we not putting our best foot forward for the London Olympics?

In a freewheeling chat with NDTV, the son of Home Minister P.Chidambaram, brushed aside the charge that the tennis body could have averted this ugly showdown saying, "Whatever way we had cut the cake, someone would have been unhappy. It would have been an unpopular decision. We have three top ranked players. What could we have done? If there is any fault in the tennis system, it is the paucity of players."

Denying reports of favouritism, Karti clarified, "We are not like the BCCI. We cannot stop a player from playing in any international arena."

It is no secret that Karti Chidambaram calls the shots in the tennis association. As he leaves for London for Wimbledon, Karti adds, "We are in constant touch with Leander. We hope he plays."

On the controversy over the mixed doubles pairing, Karti defends the decision to place Leander with Sania instead of Mahesh who did well with her in the French Open.

"We did not want to wait to announce this after Wimbledon as suggested in some quarters as it would have led to unnecessary speculation."

The Chidambaram junior has appealed to the players to "end the debates and prove their point on the tennis court".
