Paris:
Henman, who reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2004, lost in the second round in his last two attempts.
On Tuesday, Henman was level with Gulbis at 2-2 in the third set, but then lost his serve.
"Yeah, well, I came second. That's for sure," the 53rd-ranked Henman said. "And with the way that I practiced the last four or five days, it's pretty difficult for me to try to explain."
The 32-year-old Briton has not reached the third round of a Grand Slam event since the Australian Open in 2005. Three years ago, Henman reached at least the quarterfinals in three of the four majors - including the US Open semifinals.
"I give him credit," Henman added. "He played very, very well. He served incredibly consistently."
It was only the 14th career match for the 18-year-old Latvian, and his sixth win.
"In the beginning I was nervous, that's normal," the 84th-ranked Gulbis said. "And slowly I started playing better and better."
Gulbis had never beaten a player ranked higher than 81st before Tuesday.
