Indian Wells:

Defending champion Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia defeated Indian tennis star Sania Mirza by 6-1, 7-6 on Tuesday night in the Pacific Life Open WTA championships.

The formidable forehand of Sania was on display during the match but the winning touch was once again, missing.

The Slovakian would have known that Sania Mirza, ranked 32 in the world, was not going to be an easy match. Sania, watched on by Mahesh Bhupathi and her new coach, appeared really slow off the blocks.

Hantuchova raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set as Sania struggled with her first serve getting in just 50 per cent of them. She lost the first set by 1-6.

However, the big forehand was on display in the second set as Sania took a 2-0 lead, only to be broken right back.

Sania proved that her game certainly isn't uni-dimensional. She pulled out enough Justine Henin like backhand to make sure that the second set stayed on serve.

However, it was only Sania to blame as she missed three break points to take a 5-3 lead in the second set. It was clearly evident that her wrist injury was beginning to bother her.

The Indian forced it into a tiebreaker and then came back from 4-0 down to make it 5-4, hoping to take the game to a third set.

Hantuchova, who played steady but not spectacular, closed it out holding her nerve on the bigger points.

But Sania surely did well enough to prove once again that she needs only a little more consistency to become amongst the top ten.
