Den Bosch:
Top-seeded Elena Dementieva retired with a leg injury in the second round of the Ordina Open, conceding to Denisa Chladkova at 5-5 in the first set.
The sixth-ranked Russian, who had a first-round bye, played with a bandage on her right thigh. Up a break, Dementieva called for a trainer after dropping her serve to bring the score back on serve at 4-3.
After each broke the other again, the Australian and US Open finalist failed to capitalise on a set point at 5-4 and retired after her Czech opponent held on to her serve.
Krajicek advances
Michaella Krajicek advanced to the second round with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ludmila Cervanova.
The 16-year-old Krajicek plans to play mixed doubles at Wimbledon with her half brother, Richard, the 1996 Wimbledon champion.
Also, fourth-seeded Dinara Safina beat Shahar Peer 6-2, 6-1, and Lucie Safarova defeated fifth-seeded Nuria Lllagostera Vives 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.
In men's first-round action at the grass-court event, wild card Mark Philippoussis saved two set points in the tiebreaker in beating seventh-seeded Christopher Rochus 6-3, 7-6 (10/8).
Also, Sjeng Schalken defeated Bjon Phau 7-6 (7/5), 6-1, Mario Ancic dispatched qualifier Paul Logtens 6-4, 6-2, and Davide Sanguinetti beat Karol Kucera 7-6 (7/1), 6-4. Jonas Bjorkman eliminated sixth-seeded Andrei Pavel 6-2, 7-6 (7/1).
Martina Navratilova, who on Monday lost her maiden attempt at singles since last year's Wimbledon, rebounded from a first-set tiebreak loss to advance in the doubles with partner Anna-Lena Groenefeld.
They defeated Czech pair Safarova and Klara Koukalova 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 6-3. (AP)
