Davenport cruises to round 4

In the night session, 1998 US Open winner Lindsay Davenport notched her 20th consecutive victory with a straight sets 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 victory of No 26 seed Elena Bovina of Russia on Saturday night to progress to the last 16 at Flushing Meadows. Davenport will now play twice champion Venus Williams, who beat fellow American Chanda Rubin 7-6 6-3, for a place in the quarter finals. In 24 previous meetings between Davenport and Williams, they have won 12 apiece. Davenport won the most recent encounter, beating Williams in the Stanford final in July. (AP)
