Connecticut:

Third-seeded Marion Bartoli defeated Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-0, 6-4 on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Pilot Pen tournament.

After cruising through the first set, Bartoli appeared to lose focus in the middle of the second as Ruano Pascual broke her in the seventh game, then held serve in the next to tie it 4-all.

The 11th-ranked Bartoli recovered, holding serve at love and breaking No 90 Ruano Pascual in another love game to end the match.

"When you start 6-love in the first and 3-love in the second set, it's hard to keep your concentration," Bartoli said. "You start thinking about your next match, rather than the one you have to finish. I think she also started to play better. She realized she had nothing to lose and I get tight a little bit. You just have to focus back on your game and close it out in two sets."
