London: As the Rhythmic Gymnastics gather pace at the London Games, Google Doodle comes up with its version celebrating the sport in all its glory.
Rhythmic gymnastics involves ballet, gymnastics, dance, and apparatus manipulation. A panel of judges decides the winner based on points, for leaps, balances, pirouettes (pivots), flexibilities, apparatus handling, execution, and artistic effect.
The Olympic Rhythmic Gymnastics are an event that feature only women. It takes place both in the individual category as well as the group one.
Los Angeles 1984 were the first Olympic Games to host the Rhythmic Gymnastics. Then, only the women individual event took place.
Canadian Lori Fung won the Gold, Romania's Doina Stainculescu Silver and West Germany's Regina Weber the bronze.
The group events started in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Spain won the Gold, Bulgaria the Silver and Russia the bronze.
At the London Olympics 2012, the event started on August 9 and the last of the medal rounds will take place on the last day of the Games, August 12.
