With a minimum of sixty overs still left to be bowled in the day, the hosts would look to wrap the match and the series in their favour after Alastair Cook constructed a patient 106 off 231 balls. His innings was further consolidated by Kevin Pietersen (72) and Ian Bell (57*) as England took advantage of a bowling attack that looked blunt at best.
With skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan diagnosed with a broken thumb, the woes for the Sri Lanakan side seemed stacked against them, especially after a batting collapse in the 1st of the three Test series gave the match away to England.
