Although the Justice Mukul Mudgal report has indicted Chennai Super Kings' Gurunath Meiyappan for betting during the Indian Premier League matches last year, it will have no effect on the players' auctions scheduled in Bangalore on February 12 and 13. CSK are two-time champions of the world's richest T20 league. (Gurunath Meiyappan is indicted)
The auctions this year will generate tremendous interest since several franchises like Delhi Daredevils will pick absolutely fresh teams. The IPL governing council has already released its list of top players up for grabs after teams retained key men for the upcoming season. (Player retention strategies)
Former IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said the Justice Mudgal report submitted to the Supreme Court on Monday is a probe ordered by the apex court and should not affect the auctions. "The good that Supreme Court has done is that the IPL auction was not stopped. It will happen as planned for all the teams in Bangalore (on February 12 and 13)," said Rajeev Shukla. The Supreme Court will discuss the Mudgal committee report again on March 7 and is expected to give its verdict on those indicted in the 170-page document. Although CSK and Rajasthan Royals can face termination according to IPL's franchise agreement, at least for the time being there are no such indications. "Supreme Court is an apex court and it will give some views and we should wait for Supreme Court's views," he said.
"We should leave it to Supreme Court what decisions they take. IPL auction will continue, we need to wait for Supreme Court directive."
The IPL has not announced any dates or fixtures so far. The tournament this year is likely to clash with the elections and matches may be played abroad. (Sehwag, Yuvraj attract top base price)
