At least 8 people, including a bookie, have been arrested by a special team of Kolkata Police from the Ultadanga area here for alleged involvement in a cricket betting racket.
Although links with the Indian Premier League's spot-fixing controversy have not yet been established, it has been learnt that one of the men arrested - Ajit Sureka - was involved in betting on horse racing and there is evidence that he and his associates also betted on cricket.
Ajit Sureka has claimed he is a film producer and a familiar name in the Tollygunge film studios circuit.
Kolkata police arrested the men late Wednesday night and recovered some laptops, 12 mobile phones and Rs 3 lakh in cash.
"We have arrested 10 people, including a bookie last night. We are investigating the case. They will be produced before a court today," DC (DD special) Santosh Pandey said.
Police are now investigating possible links between these men and betting on previous as well as upcoming semifinal and final matches of the IPL.
