Ladakh, the frontier region of Jammu and Kashmir, will get an 18-hole international standard golf course by middle of 2014.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah laid the foundation stone of the Rs 12-crore Golf Course here on Friday. The course will be developed over an area of 76 hectares and is expected to be completed within next two years, an official spokesman said.

The state's golf circuit -- covering Jammu, Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Leh -- will be completed with the opening of this venue for international golfers, who can try their hands at the game.

Speaking on the occasion, Omar said tourism has been the mainstay in the economy of Ladakh and its strengthening and upgrading has been flagged as an important sector by his government.

"We want to create different attractions for tourists so that they visit here again and again," he said.

Omar said construction of a golf course in Leh would give impetus to the efforts of the government to showcase this area for high class sports tourism.

"Golfers can use this course to play in a different geographical condition and enjoy the unique beauty of this area," he added.
