IPL spot-fixing: Sreesanth's lawyer accuses police of deliberate leaks

Updated: 23 May 2013 13:08 IST

Rebecca John, Sreesanth's lawyer, said police involved in the corruption probe were "deliberately planting leaks" in the media against her client.

The lawyer representing S Sreesanth, one of three Rajasthan Royals cricketers charged with spot fixing during the ongoing Pepsi Indian Premier League 2013, has accused the police of trying to tarnish Sreesanth's reputation.

Rebecca John, Sreesanth's lawyer, said police involved in the corruption probe were "deliberately planting leaks" in the media against her client. John's comments came a day after Sreesanth as well as Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were refused bail following their court appearance over the scandal. Sreesanth, for his part, released a statement through John on Tuesday, where he said, "I am innocent and have done no wrong. I have utmost faith in our judicial process and I am confident that with time I will be proved innocent, and my honour and dignity will be vindicated and restored."

Elsewhere, Press Trust of India reported that Mumbai Police might include Gurunath Meiyappan, CEO of Chennai Super Kings, among the list of people to be questioned in their ongoing probe, though there were no indications that Gurunath was involved in corrupt practices.

Himanshu Roy, Joint Commissioner (Crime) of Mumbai Police, meanwhile, said on Wednesday that Vindoo Dara Singh, the actor who has been linked with spot fixing, had facilitated the escape of two bookies - Pawan and Sanjay - to Dubai from Mumbai on May 17.

Vindoo had been detained by the police on Tuesday for his alleged association with bookies and, according to Roy, has been deeply involved in betting.

Roy said Vindoo's Juhu residence has been searched and three mobile phones belonging to Pawan, and a laptop and an iPad belonging to Vindoo had been confiscated and the data in them was being analysed.
