IPL betting: Wrong to doubt credibility of BCCI committee probing Gurunath Meiyappan, says Sunil Gavaskar

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has full faith in the three-member independent committee set-up to investigate the charges of alleged betting against 'CSK enthusiast' Gurunath Meiyappan. He says it is "more prudent to be patient and let them find out what the truth is."

Asked if he thought the committee will be fair in its findings against Meiyappan, the son-in-law of BCCI chief N Srinivasan, Gavaskar said one should not jump to conclusion that the members won't be fair. "Why are you doubting them? Why are you doubting their credibility, their honesty and integrity even before they have started their deliberations? I think we should be patient and the commission will give its report," he said. (Watch: Srinivasan defiant)

While NDTV learnt from sources that former cricketer Ravi Shastri, BCCI treasurer Ajay Shirke and a retired High Court judge will be part of the committee, Gavaskar said he was not aware of the same but pointed out public perception should not be influenced by media trials. "When a case like this happens and is discussed in the public domain as this one has been, the public has already perceived the guilty party. At the end of the day, even if five people outside the cricket Board and they decided that this thing wasn't what the public wanted, perception would be that pressure was brought on," said Gavaskar. Meiyappan is being currently investigated by the Mumbai police for allegedly betting in CSK matches and is in custody till Wednesday (May 29).
