Noor Ali Zadran smashed a couple of boundaries but he was bowled by Rangana Herath as Afghanistan got off to a poor start.
After 10 overs, Afghanistan were 47/3 and it seemed that they would not pose a challenging total.
However, Asghar Stanikzai and Samiullah Shenwari stitched a 61-run stand as Afghanistan made rapid progress towards the end.
Stanikzai notched up his third fifty as Afghanistan finished on 153/7 after the end of 20 overs.
Chasing 154, Sri Lanka got off to a fast start but they lost Dinesh Chandimal thanks to some good bowling from Mohammad Nabi.
However, Tillakaratne Dilshan, who had scored two ducks heading into this match, got going with two sixes. He used the Dil-Scoop to perfection as he attacked the Afghanistan bowlers.
Rashid Khan, the 17-year-old legspinner, the second-youngest player to feature in the World T20, showed his mettle by getting rid of Lahiru Thirimanne as Afghanistan put up a fight.
Thisara Perera was promoted up the order but it did not yield much reward as he struggled to get going.
Dilshan was playing a solid hand and his presence ensured that Sri Lanka did not slip behind.
Dilshan remained unbeaten on 83 and Sri Lanka registered a nervy six-wicket win over Afghanistan.
