Riaz struck again as he sent back David Warner with a pacy delivery.
With two quick wickets, Australia were suddenly on the back foot.
Imad Wasim was also among the wickets as he sent back Aaron Finch for 15.
However, Steven Smith shared a wonderful 62-run stand with Glenn Maxwell but it was his 74-run stand off 38 balls with Shane Watson took the game away from Pakistan. Smith scored his second fifty as Australia amassed 193/4.
Chasing 194, Ahmed Shehzad fell cheaply but Sharjeel Khan got Pakistan off to a fast start.
However, James Faulkner came into the attack and dismissed Sharjeel as Pakistan lost momentum.
Umar Akmal and Shahid Afridi threatened a partnership but Faulkner, supported by Adam Zampa, took wickets at regular intervals. Faulkner finished with 5/27, the first five-wicket haul by an Australian in Twenty20 internationals.
Australia's 21-run win knocked Pakistan out of the tournament. Their next match against India is a virtual knock-out, with the winner progressing to the semi-finals.
