California:

Sweden's Annika Sorenstam won the first LPGA major of the season on Sunday, romping to an eight shot victory in the Kraft Nabisco Championship in southern California. She entered the final round of the championship, the first LPGA major of the year, with a 5-shot edge over Rosie Jones. Considering she had won her last four tournaments, victory seemed all but assured. Sorenstam continued her awesome form. Her chip onto the green on the second hole stopped well within birdie range, and she made no mistake with the putt. She also sank a short birdie putt on the 4th hole, and a longer birdie attempt at the 5th. Before long, Sorenstam moved to 15-under par, and held a 7-shot advantage. Rosie Jones was the Swede's closest pursuer. Jones' round included a delicate chip from the greenside rough on the 12th hole. Jones finished with a pair of 71s in the final two rounds after being tied for the lead going into the third round. She finished the tournament a distant second at 7-under par. 15-year old American teenager Michelle Wie, in her 20th LPGA event, played a superb approach shot on the 18th hole. Wie finished outside the top 10 for the first time in three years in the Nabisco, shooting a final round 71 to finish at even par, 15 shots back. Cristie Kerr sank a long birdie putt on the 14th hole, and lowered her score to a respectable 6-under par. But Sorenstam played with such a calm demeanour, and with such precision, there would be no catching her. Laura Diaz made birdie on the 16th to lower her score to 4-under par. Diaz would finish in a tie for third place with Kerr, both at 5-under par. Sorenstam finished with a par at the 18th to secure her eighth win in a major tournament. It was Sorenstam's fifth in a row over two seasons, tying a record set by Nancy Lopez in 1978. Moments after her record setting victory, Sorenstam took off for the ceremonial jump into champions lake. (AP)
