Monza, Italy:
Five-time world Formula One champion Michael Schumacher looked poised to set another record as he led the first practice for the Italian Grand Prix on Friday.
On a cool and cloudy day Schumacher's Ferrari timed 1min 22.433sec over the 5.793km circuit just ahead of his Brazilian teammate Rubens Barrichello.
Schumacher is looking to break a season points record. Entering the race with 122, he is just one point shy of 123 points, a record for modern times.
Although scoring systems have changed throughout the years, it would be hard to top the German's 10 victories, three seconds and a third as he clinched his fifth world title in July.
"I'm actually happy about the work we did," Schumacher said. "We had quite a full programme which worked out well. We did some tyre checks, we made a few set-up changes trying to improve our performance and we can be quite confident".
The German has won three times here - 1996, 1998 and 2000. (PTI)
