Sepang:
Honda's Thomas Luthi won the 125cc Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix on Sunday to extend his lead atop of the world championship standing to eight points over nearest rival Mika Kallio of KTM.
An exhilarating dogfight in the last few laps of the 19-lap race saw a photo-finish to decide the winner as the Swiss held on to come in with a time of 43'02.214, just two-hundredth of a second ahead of Finn Kallio.
Talamasci finishes third
With the win, Luthi is now on 189 points against Kallio's 181 points in second and Gabor Talamasci a€" also astride a KTM who finished fifth on the day a€" on third with 131 points.
Italian Mattia Passini, who is fourth in the world championship standing, finished third in Sepang, riding an Aprilia, to collect 16 points for a total haul of 127 points with four more races still to go to the end of the season.
Luthi, who had suffered a crash in Japan last week, attributed his win to the good work put in by his team.
"The race was not easy but the team worked hard to put the bike back together after Japan last week," said Luthi.
"I tried to make a break but Mika was close behind. But I'm happy with the win."
Focus on performance
Kallio, who was disappointed with his mistake at the last lap, will be gunning to improve on his performance in the next race in Qatar.
"Thomas was very fast but I managed to come closer at the end of every lap," added Kallio.
"I had planned to overtake him in the last lap but I made the mistake at the second last corner which allowed Thomas to finish the race just a little ahead of me." (AP)
