Wigan Athletic keep up FA Cup defense by beating Cardiff City

FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic advanced to the quarterfinals by eliminating Premier League struggler Cardiff City, and Sunderland progressed with a victory over Southampton on Saturday.
Ben Watson, whose goal clinched the cup before Wigan was relegated from the top flight last May, secured a 2-1 win at Cardiff.
Sunderland already has a League Cup final to prepare for, and Craig Gardner's long-range strike in the 50th minute gave the Black Cats a 1-0 victory over Southampton in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Later Saturday, Manchester City hosts its Premier League title rivals Chelsea as the teams meet for the second time in two weeks with a place in the last eight at stake.
