Tiger Cup: Singapore beat Laos

Hanoi:

Singapore moved a step closer to making the last four of the 2004 Tiger Cup as they whipped minnows Laos 6-2 on Monday. They needed a win as they took on Laos in their crucial Group A tie. With Indonesia defeating hosts Vietnam last week, Singapore's knew that wins against Laos and Cambodia would get them through. Singapore did not waste time against Laos as Hasrin Jailani put them ahead after just seven minutes with a superb long-range strike. Building the lead In the 19th minute Singapore doubled the lead through their star striker Indra Sahdan Daud. The 23-year-old's free kick deflected off the wall and crashed into the net for the second goal. Laos showed a semblance of a fight back when they reduced the margin in the 22nd minute. Visay Phaphouvanin pouncing on the ball as it came off the wall knocked it into the goal. At 2-1 Laos looked capable of upsetting Singapore's plans but then a defensive error proved costly. Wrong position In the 41st minute a harmless long ball was headed back towards goal by Laos defender Sengphel Thongphachan. But with his goalkeeper badly positioned, the ball rolled into an empty net. Sengphel was devastated and Laos trailed 3-1. Singapore made it 4-1 on the stroke of half time as their Nigeria born forward Agu Casmir neatly chested down a cross and knocked the ball into the corner of the net. It was Agu's first international goal for Singapore and he duly celebrated the memorable moment. After both teams scored a goal apiece, Singapore sealed their win with their sixth strike in injury time. Agu Casmir scoring his second as he converted a spot kick to make it 6-2 for Singapore. Singapore stand are second with five points, followed by Vietnam with four points with Laos and Cambodia bringing up the rear. (AP)
