Rome:
Former Germany coach Rudi Voeller took charge of AS Roma on Tuesday following the resignation of Cesare Prandelli.
Voeller flew into Rome, signed a one-year contract and immediately assumed control of the Serie A team's training session at the Trigoria training centre.
Former Parma coach Prandelli, who replaced Fabio Capello during the close season, stepped down this month due to his wife's ill health.
Disappointing campaign
Voeller had stepped down as coach of his country's national team following a disappointing Euro 2004 campaign in Portugal in June.
The 44-year-old Voeller, whose wife is Italian, was AS Roma's first choice, after Prandelli departed.
His arrival in Roma is something of a homecoming for the former striker. The German played for AS Roma between 1987 and 1992.
Voeller faces the difficult task of getting his Roma team into shape for the September 12 opening of the Serie A season.
He believes that champions AC Milan are favourites for the Serie A title, but also feels that Roma are among those who could challenge them. (AP)
