In the English Premier League, Arsenal went into their boxing day clash against Chelsea knowing a win would take them on top of the table briefly. But it was Chelsea who opened the scoring in the 31st minute after some shaky defending by Arsenal gave Frank Lampard the chance to score his second goal in two games.
Freddie Ljungberg came closest to putting Arsenal back in the game, but his near post header failed to trouble the Chelsea keeper. Ashley Cole had to make a clearance off the line to keep Arsenal in the game.
The second half was barely four minutes old when Sol Campbell rose above the Chelsea defence to head in the equalizer.
Thierry Henry, who has been Arsenal's most prolific scorer this season, nearly added another, but his free kick was brilliantly saved by the Chelsea keeper.
Substitute Sylvain Wiltord gave the Gunners the lead in the 71st minute with a low drive into the left-hand corner.
Arsenal had another chance to add to their tally, but Giovanni Van Bronckhorst's drive was well saved by the keeper.
Arsenal held on to win 2-1 and claim the top spot in the Premiership for the moment.
In another match, Leeds United travelled to Bolton Wanderers where Robbie Fowler grabbed his first hat-trick for his new club and even though he missed a penalty, Leeds won the match 3-0.
