Ryan Giggs made the announcement in an open letter on Manchesdter United's website on Monday, the day he was hired as assistant manager to Louis van Gaal.

Manchester United great Ryan Giggs has ended his playing career after a club-record 963 appearances.

Giggs made the announcement in an open letter on United's website on Monday, the day he was hired as assistant manager to Louis van Gaal.

The 40-year-old Giggs says "for me, today is a new chapter filled with many emotions - immense pride, sadness, but most of all, excitement towards the future."

Giggs is British football's most decorated player.
