Manchester City defeat Whitecaps 2-1

Shaun Wright-Phillips scored from 30 yards in the 84th minute Monday as FA Cup champion Manchester City defeated Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1.

Shaun Wright-Phillips scored from 30 yards in the 84th minute Monday as FA Cup champion Manchester City defeated Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1.

It was Wright-Phillips' second goal in as many games on Man City's North American tour, having scored Saturday in a 2-0 win over Club America in San Francisco.

Brazilian Camilo opened the scoring for Vancouver in the 30th minute before Mario Balotelli equalized for the English Premier League club with a header in the 68th.

The match was played on a temporary grass field that had been drenched by rain on Saturday.

The field appeared relatively dry by Monday's kickoff, but the Whitecaps were forced to cancel a league game Saturday against Real Salt Lake because of field conditions.
