London:
Stuart Pearce was fired as manager of Manchester City on Monday, while Paul Jewell resigned as Wigan boss.
The vacant managerial position at Newcastle is expected to be filled on Tuesday, with former Bolton manager Sam Allardyce widely reported to be the choice to replace Glenn Roeder, who quit on May 6.
"Obviously there is an interest in Newcastle, where we have had a discussion, and we will see where it goes from there," Allardyce said Monday. "Of course, it has popped up a bit quicker than I thought and whatever happens in the next few days will be vital in terms of what announcement will be made."
Pearce was fired after guiding Man City to a 15th-place finish in the 20-team league. City had not scored at its home ground since Jan. 1, and the club had only 10 goals at home all season - the lowest ever in England's top division.
Pearce retains his part-time role as manager of England's under-21 team. He will be in charge during the under-21 European Championship from June 10-23 in the Netherlands.
Jewell, meanwhile, cited fatigue for stepping down as Wigan's longest and most successful manager, saying he needed a break. He quit a day after Wigan beat Sheffield United 2-1 on the final day of the season to avoid relegation.
"The intensity of football at the highest level, although completely addictive, is also very draining, and I feel I would be kidding the chairman, my players and the supporters if I was to carry on," Jewell said.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan said he does not expect Jewell to move to Manchester City.
"If Manchester City were to go for Paul Jewell, I would be very surprised," Whelan said. "I would say, 'Don't waste your time,' because Paul is a man of his word.
"I asked him a straightforward question: 'Have you been tapped up by another club?' And his answer was: 'On my children's lives I have not been approached by another club, and I will not be going to another club. I love it at Wigan and I am sorry to be resigning. But for my health I have got to do it.'"
Whelan appointed Jewell's assistant, Chris Hutchings, as his new manager.
