Mahindra United beat Mohammedan Sporting 1-0 to lift the Federation Cup in Kolkata today. Venkatesh scored the only goal. Mahindra had never won the Federation Cup before this while for Mohammedan Sporting, Kolkata's second oldest club, it was the first final in 14 years. Sporting had initially threatened to boycott the final following the death of two of their fans on Tuesday. But they decided to go ahead and play wearing black armbands as a mark of protest. Sporting had defeated city rivals Mohun Bagan in the semi-final 5-4 on penalties. Having spent the last few seasons in the second division, Sporting managed to earn a place in the National Football League this season. For Mahindra United, an eighth place finish in the last National League forced them to hire a foreign coach and David Booth a€" and the move has paid off handsomely.
