Sporting Clube de Goa avenged their first leg defeat as they edged past United Sports Club by a solitary goal in an I-League match at the Duler Stadium here on Saturday.
With the league taking a long break, Sporting Clube de Goa ended the year on a winning note to stay in second place with 27 points from 14 matches, three points behind the leaders -- Bengaluru FC -- who have played one match more than them.
Sporting Clube de Goa, who were determined to end the year on a winning note, started positively and took an early lead in the fourth minute through Rojen Singh that ultimately turned out to be the winner.
Boima Karpeh collecting the ball from a quick free kick, cut past defender Hamid and got the better of Bello Rasaq before setting up Rojen Singh, who tapped the ball into the net.
Karpeh, who caused all sorts of trouble to the rival defence then had a chance to increase the lead but his shot was blocked by Hamid.
The play was restricted in the midfield as neither of the teams could create chances.
The visitors came into their own in the latter part of the first half as they moved the ball well with Ranti Martins, who was kept quite by rival defenders, came close once, but his header off Sowmick Chakraborty cross went wide.
The trend continued in the second half even as Sporting had two early chances to increase the lead, but the rival keeper Abhijit Das, who was alert under the bar denied Gonzalo and Kalu from scoring by putting the ball out of danger.
