Goiania:

Striker Jose Calderon netted a second-half goal to help Argentina's Estudiantes advance to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores despite losing to Brazil's Goias 3-1 on Thursday. Estudiantes, which beat Goias 2-0 in the first leg last week in Argentina, advanced on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate score. Estudiantes will face defending champion Sao Paulo, which eliminated Brazilian rival Palmeiras on Wednesday 3-2 on aggregate. Calderon scored Estudiantes' lone goal with a header in the 75th minute. Defender Vitor put Goias ahead at Serra Dourada stadium in the 51st with a goal from close range after a low cross by leftback Jadilson. Striker Nonato added to the lead with a firm header in the 65th, after another cross by Jadilson, and substitute midfielder Juliano closed the scoring with a shot from outside the area one minute into second-half injury time. Goias, which needed one more goal to advance, played without defender Leonardo and striker Souza, who were ejected in the first leg. Estudiantes is one of the winningest teams in the Copa Libertadores with three titles. It won the tournament in 1968, '69 and '70. Goias was playing for the first time in the Latin American competition. It qualified after finishing third in last year's Brazilian league. (AP)
